Former Principal John Stelmack Accused of Possessing Child Porn

A jury was been selected Monday afternoon for a former Polk County principal accused of possessing child pornography. The trial will begin Tuesday morning.

John Stelmack, who was the principal at Scott Lake Elementary School, was arrested in December 2007.

According to a statement at the time from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, investigators seized a black briefcase from Stelmack's school office.

Inside the briefcase were five child pornography images.

Detectives say Stelmack took routine photographs of children in a school setting - one of whom was positively identified as a 10-year-old female student who attended Scott Lake Elementary in 2006 - and digitally superimposed their heads images of nude young adults.

"He overlayed those photographs to create child pornography...obviously from this, he's a pedophile and a predator," said Sheriff Grady Judd in a 2007 news conference.

The girl's facial image was on four of the pictures, and another unidentified female child's face was placed on the body of another nude image, according to the statement. Both girls were thought to be about 10-years-old.

Stelmack, who had principal at the school for one and a half years, was charged with five counts of Possession of Child Pornography.
