Navy Officer Lt George Stephen Koons Charged with Filming Underaged Girls

A Navy officer was arrested in Virginia and charged with filming underage girls and possessing child pornography, authorities said.

Lt. George Stephen Koons, 42, an engineering officer assigned to Naval Surface Force Atlantic in Norfolk, faces three charges of unlawful filming, videotaping or photographing a minor and seven charges of possessing child pornography, said Dorienne Boykin, a public information officer for police in Chesapeake, Va.

Koons was serving on the amphibious transport dock Nashville in December when authorities first began investigating him, Boykin said.

Koons is a former chief gas turbine system technician (mechanical).

Michael Kolkman Charged with Attempted Sexual Abuse

A young boy who may have thought he was going to the circus, was instead enticed by a sex offender.

Reno police officers arrested a convicted child predator Sunday night, after he approached the boy at the Circus Circus casino. Investigators say 43-year-old Michael Kolkman is also wanted by law enforcement in Alaska on charges of attempted sexual abuse.

Statistically, it's not all that out of the ordinary to find a sex offender living downtown. Currently, hundreds of registered sex offenders have addresses within just blocks of downtown, plus more than 1,700 sex offenders in our area are un-registered and out-of-compliance, meaning, no one is really sure what they're up to.

Danny and Kathy Kennedy manage the Shamrock Inn across the street from Circus Circus, which is where police arrested Kolkman on felony warrant charges. The Kennedy's say when Kolkman came in to get a room, they had no idea he was dangerous.

"He was a nice fellow, nothing out of the ordinary," said Kathy.

Detectives say Kolkman bought the young boy a soda, made a few inappropriate comments to him, and then followed him through the casino. Luckily, the boy told his parents, and police were soon on Kolkman's trail.

Kathy says frankly, she's surprised this case is getting so much attention since this isn't the first time a sex offender has checked into her hotel. In fact, she says it's the fifth time in just five years.

"Sex offenders do come in. Unfortunately, they don't come in with tattoos or neon signs on their faces, so you don't know. They look like you or I. They just look like average people," she said.

Kathy's husband says if people are now worried about bringing their young children downtown, he thinks sex offenders should be the least of their concerns. Danny says he sleeps with one eye open, listening for trouble in the neighborhood, including, drunks, drug dealers and hookers.

Over the years, he says his life has been threatened more times than he can count. Most recently, a man pulled a knife on him after he told him to leave the property. He says the man was in the act of urinating on the hotel's wall.

"I've had a baseball bat pulled on me., a crowbar that someone got out of their trunk, a beer bottle, you name it," said Danny.

The Kennedy's say Circus Circus is not to blame, but that dangerous people and situations lurk in nearly every corner of the downtown area near Center Street. And they say no amount of redevelopment money, street lights, or fancy signs will change that.

"Downtown is not safe. That's what I got to say about it. It's not safe," said Danny.

As far as the young boy at Circus Circus goes, he wasn't harmed. The casino managers say he did everything right, as did their security guards. As a rule, minors are never allowed on the casino floor, and when they are spending time on the midway or elsewhere in the casino, their security staff is always watching for strange behavior--or in this case, suspicious people.

Kolkman is being held on more than $50,000 bail for annoying and molesting a minor and for failing to register as a sex offender. He'll also be forced to face the sexual abuse charges out of Alaska. Police believe he'd been staying in our area since June 4th.

Timothy Holmes Arrested for Possession of Child Porn

FBI agents arrested a Medina Christian Academy teacher this week on a child pornography charge.

Timothy A. Holmes, 40, of 4262 Weymouth Road, Medina Township, has been employed by the Medina Township school for 16 years, the Cleveland division of the FBI reported.

Special Agent Scott T. Wilson of the FBI’s Cleveland office said Holmes allegedly began communicating over the Internet with members of an undercover FBI task force in October. Innocent Images — the New York City-based task force — works on cases of child pornography and child predators.

Wilson alleged Holmes sent the undercover agents images of child pornography. He could not say how many images were sent.

Innocent Images referred Holmes’ case to the Akron FBI office, which immediately began investigating.

Holmes could face five to 20 years in prison if convicted of possession, receipt and distribution of child pornography, a federal felony. He currently is in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Wilson said during Holmes’ appearance in U.S. District Court Thursday that a magistrate ordered Holmes be detained. He will have a hearing regarding his detention status next Thursday, the special agent said.

Wilson said “if there’s anything people feel our Akron office needs to know” regarding Holmes, they should contact the office at (330) 535-6156.

A message left with Medina Christian Academy was not immediately returned Friday. An answering machine greeting said the school was on summer break and its offices were closed Thursday and Friday.

The school, at 3646 Medina Road, offers classes in preschool through 12th grade. PrivateSchoolReview.com said the school was founded in 1981 by Medina First Baptist Church and serves Christian families from churches throughout Medina, Cuyahoga, Summit and Lorain counties.

Glenn Ware Arrested for Possession of Child Porn

A Carson City man out on bail as he awaits trial on charges that he possessed dozens of images of child porn, was arrested Sunday night as he exited the movie theater in violation of his bail conditions.

Glenn Ware, 60, was booked into the Carson City Jail at 10:14 p.m.

He was initially arrested April 24 on a warrant charging him with 32 counts of possession of child pornography following a March search of his home in which computers and other items were seized by investigators.

Ware came to the attention of authorities after an undercover federal agent allegedly exchanged e-mails with Ware in which Ware solicited child pornography, according to police reports.

A subsequent search of his computers revealed dozens, “if not hundreds” of images of children as young as 12 months old being sexually violated, said Detective Craig Lowe.

According to Rory Planeta, chief of the Carson City Department of Alternative Sentencing, Ware posted $100,000 bail April 28, and was released from custody to house arrest. H was also ordered to wear a GPS monitoring device to track his whereabouts for the first 40 days.

On Sunday, an Alternative Sentencing officer was attempting to locate Ware to remove the GPS device, when it was discovered that Ware was at the Galaxy Theater, in violation of a court order that he be on house arrest and stay away from areas frequented by children, said Planeta.

Ware was arrested as he exited the building about 9:15 p.m.

During a hearing this morning, Justice of the Peace Robey Willis reinstated Ware's house arrest and GPS monitoring.

A preliminary hearing is set for July 6.

Robert Lee Ervin Arrested for Child Porn

FBI agents and Conasauga Safe Streets Task Force officers arrested a man late last week who they say traveled to Walker County to have sex with a 14-year-old girl.

Robert Lee Ervin, 39, of Sweetwater, Tenn., was arrested on charges of child pornography and criminal attempt child exploitation.

According to the FBI, Ervin had been engaged in a series of Internet chats with what he thought was a 14-year-old girl. He traveled to Walker County from Tennessee to meet with this “minor child” and was subsequently arrested.

He is currently being detained at the Walker County Detention Facility.

The task force consists of agents from the FBI and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, as well as officers from the Whitfield Sheriff’s Office, Dalton Police Department and Calhoun Police Department.

John Perry Ryan Pleads Guilty to Transmitting Child Porn

A Vermont man is going to federal prison and losing his home for trafficking in child pornography.

John Perry Ryan, 63, pled guilty Monday to transmitting child pornography on the internet in 2006. It included a photo of an adult male having sex with a toddler.

In the plea deal, Ryan will also forfeit his home in Braintree. Under federal law, he automatically faces at least five years in prison.

Authorities say specially-trained police officers are catching more online predators but the threat of arrest is not always a deterrent.

Burlington Police Chief Mike Schirling explained, "The need-driven behavior that many of these offenders are involved with easily overwhelms deterrent effect in many, many cases. There have been instances where we've arrived at houses with search warrants and the offenders have indicated that they either knew or they thought that we were coming. And, even with that information, still didn't dispose of their child pornography, didn't eliminate evidence."

Chief Schirling helped to establish Vermont's Internet Crimes division in 1997.

A Hillsboro mother dials 911 claiming she killed her 12-year-old daughter and now, that mother is behind bars, while yet another child fights for her life.

Sheriff Jeffrey T. Lyon was paged to an abondoned house Friday night north of Hillsboro and when he arrived, Debra Jeter stood at the end of the driveway and surrendered to deputies.

Lyon says he was not prepared for what he saw inside the house saying, "it was just a very tragic horrific um heart gripping crime scene."

Lyon says, "she had picked the children up at 6 on a friday for the court order and uh the father released the children to the mother and that was the last time that he saw his daughters."

Sheriff Lyon has spoken with the father who says he has no idea why Debra Jeter would do this.

Jeter's bond is det at $1.5 million for murder and attempted capital murder charges.

Friends of the family say Kelsee was a girl scout, an honor student and that she had just performed in her school musical, at Hillsboro Intermediate School.

Former Principal John Stelmack Accused of Possessing Child Porn

A jury was been selected Monday afternoon for a former Polk County principal accused of possessing child pornography. The trial will begin Tuesday morning.

John Stelmack, who was the principal at Scott Lake Elementary School, was arrested in December 2007.

According to a statement at the time from the Polk County Sheriff's Office, investigators seized a black briefcase from Stelmack's school office.

Inside the briefcase were five child pornography images.

Detectives say Stelmack took routine photographs of children in a school setting - one of whom was positively identified as a 10-year-old female student who attended Scott Lake Elementary in 2006 - and digitally superimposed their heads images of nude young adults.

"He overlayed those photographs to create child pornography...obviously from this, he's a pedophile and a predator," said Sheriff Grady Judd in a 2007 news conference.

The girl's facial image was on four of the pictures, and another unidentified female child's face was placed on the body of another nude image, according to the statement. Both girls were thought to be about 10-years-old.

Stelmack, who had principal at the school for one and a half years, was charged with five counts of Possession of Child Pornography.
