John Perry Ryan Pleads Guilty to Transmitting Child Porn

A Vermont man is going to federal prison and losing his home for trafficking in child pornography.

John Perry Ryan, 63, pled guilty Monday to transmitting child pornography on the internet in 2006. It included a photo of an adult male having sex with a toddler.

In the plea deal, Ryan will also forfeit his home in Braintree. Under federal law, he automatically faces at least five years in prison.

Authorities say specially-trained police officers are catching more online predators but the threat of arrest is not always a deterrent.

Burlington Police Chief Mike Schirling explained, "The need-driven behavior that many of these offenders are involved with easily overwhelms deterrent effect in many, many cases. There have been instances where we've arrived at houses with search warrants and the offenders have indicated that they either knew or they thought that we were coming. And, even with that information, still didn't dispose of their child pornography, didn't eliminate evidence."

Chief Schirling helped to establish Vermont's Internet Crimes division in 1997.

  3. I have followed this case, as I lived 2 houses away from this man in Braintree and I raised 2 sons there. It is truly frightening. My sons have said nothing ever happened with him. I was shocked when this story came out, he was a great neighbor and I thought friend. It disgusts me that people can have such opposite sides to their personality.
