Eugene James Schmidt Arrested for Sexual Assault


A 61-year-old Grand Junction man remained in jail Sunday one day after he was arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a child on multiple occasions, authorities said.

Eugene James Schmidt is accused of nine felonies in connection with the alleged incidents. Each of the counts is a class III felony.

He faces up to life in prison if convicted of the alleged offenses, based on state sentencing guidelines.

Schmidt was arrested about 3:20 p.m. Saturday in the 700 block of Colorado Avenue. Officer Martin Donohue of the Grand Junction Police Department made the arrest.

He was taken to Mesa County Jail and booked on the alleged offenses.

Details about the incident that led to his arrest were not available. Schmidt is being held on $60,000 bond at Mesa County Jail.
